I first heard of the Havanese from a magazine in the early 1990s. The article and accompanying photo described a little dog that seemed perfect to me in every way. A year later, when I first met a Havanese and sank my hands into that exquisitely soft fur, I was hooked and I knew I had found my breed. My first Havanese "Mitzi" paved the way. It wasn't long before I had to have another and then another. I have done many assorted activities with our Havanese including training and competing in Conformation, Agility, Obedience, Rally and some herding. We are also involved in a Pet therapy program. To date, I have 50+ assorted titles and certificates on my Havanese. In addition to all this, I am an instructor for a local Canine Education center where I teach an obedience class geared exclusively to small dogs and also Rally classes. I have been writing canine columns and articles about Havanese for almost 15 years for assorted publications. In honour of the breed heritage, I chose a Spanish word Mimosa for my kennel name. You might be thinking Mimosa is a beautiful feathery flower , a suitable name as its reminiscent of the fluffy Havanese coats or you might be thinking of Mimosa as the effervescent cocktail ; which works along with the bubbly Havanese personality. Mimosa also means something else. In Spanish, "Mimosa" is a very descriptive adjective meaning pampered, affectionate, coquette, frolicsome, beguiling, and playful.... in one word ...... "Mimosa" is everything that a Havanese is.
